HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
MAYORAL INSTALLATION. Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, who was re-elected Mayor of Petone unopposed, was installed yesterday. Councillor Coles, in asking the Mayer to sign the declaration, congratulated liim on his return-, to tho chair. It; showed that his past services had .been appreciated, not only* by the Councillors, . but by the general public. The work he had done had been dono well. During .his term of office he had'given a great deal' of tithe, and made many trips to Welrepresentative on various important bodies. The quality ho admired in 'Mr. M'Ewan, was his good,' sound. common sense, which was important in a man in his position. After signing tho declaration; the Mayor thanked the Councillors for their kind expressions, and proceeded to outline the works which he hoped would'be puU through dufing tho year. The wharf had been somewhat delayed through the contractors not being able to get the necessary piles.'but it would now proceed much more quickly. -Tho plans for the bridge over the river were, ho understood, well in hand, and tenders would soon be called for that work. The oastoru drain-age-work would be initiated as soon as tho working plans wore, ready, , but it would bo perhaps wise to leave it till the-spring. HUTT RIVER BOARD. The usual monthly meeting of the Board, which was to havo. been held last night, lapsed for want of a quorum; and now stands adjourned till May 11. ' >
