TOLICE CASES. (Before Mr. AV. G. Riddell, S.M., on Wednesday). DRUNKENNESS. Three first offenders wero convicted and 5 discharged. i Edmund J. Lawless, a 'middle-aged and 1 respectably dressed man, was ordered to tho ! l'akatoa Inebriates' Home for a year. ' FORGING A TELEGRAM. , ) A young man named Ernest Wehrstedt appeared to answer a charge of forging tlio r name of Frederick M'Bean t-o a telegram addressed to Herbert' Wells, "Wellington, at Raurimu on Jlarch 16. Frederick M'Bean, clerk, of Wellington, t stated that ho met accused at Taumarunui . on March 13. Accused said that his namo 1 was Green, and that he was a partner in . tho Stratford firm of Stebie and Green. Witness could not withdraw money from the | Post Offiep Sayings Bank, as Taumarunui _ was in another postal district, and accused j offered to lot him havo £2 to £-1. Accused asked for witness's initials to give him ,n ' letter of .introduction, and lie asked 5 witness if he know anyone in Wellington, . and tlio namo of Herbert Wells was men--3 tioned. They went to Raurimu to get. money, which was owing accused, but ho 3 found that tlio men ho wanted wero fortyt five miles up the line, and lie entered the • Post Offico saying that ho would wire his 3 partner for the money. Accused camo out j with some gold, and handed witness £2. Both returned to Taumarunui that evening. 1' Next morning witness thanked accused for tlio money, and said ho would return it, j but accused askqd him not to send it care , of the firm, as lie did not want his partner v to know that ho had lent tho money, and . asked that it bo sent to Post Office, Strat- . ford. At Wanganui, witness_ withdrew £2 r from his account,' and posted it as directed. When ho arrived In Wellington ho found c that Mr. Wells had receivod a telegram in f witness's name, asking for £6. The matter i was reported to the police. Herbert Wells gave corroborative, ovid- . onco. John Thomas Williams, postmaster, Rauj rimu, produced: copies of tho telegrams to and.'from Welliiigton. The accused, added , witness, signed the receipt; for tlio money 1 order for £6. Detcctivo Broberg stated that when ho charged Green with the offence ho admitted. 3 it, and also said that ho received the £2 i from Wanganui. . Accused pleaded guilty, and was cominitu tod to the Supreme Court for sentence. - ALLEGED FORGERY AND UTTERING. 1 Pcrcival John Hughes, alias Bartlott, 5 alias Williams, was charged with forging tho ! namo of G. Williams to n cliequo for £10 1 on the Bank of Australasia, Wellington', and " uttering it to Ethel Grant. . > Edward James- Rou'so, labourer, of . Po--5 tone,-said that on-April 18 lie mot accused at the, Grand National Hotel. Accused! asked tho licensee for a blank cheque, and, he filled it in and' signed -it "Guy Wil-. ! liams." ■ ■ Ethel Grant, wife of Eriifst Grant, morcer : at Petono, stated that accused entered tho : shop and purchased an overcoat and .goods to tho valuo of £3. Ho said that lie was : l a cousin-of Mr. T. C. Williams, and ran- . holder at Te Parao, Masterton. Tho man . • received tho change, £2/ and* left the 'shop.-The:-cheque was afterwards • handed :to tho' ■ ■ police. ; Guy Williams, part owner of Te Parao - station, said that accused was working 'on , the estate under tho namo of Williams. ; ; Witness know of no other Guy Williams in .. tho Wairarapa'. ' Frederick William Roborts,' ledger-keeper ; at ' tho Bank of Australasia, 'Wellington, -. stated that tho cheque in question was f presente<l,' but it was not honoured. No | person of tho -name of : Guy Williams had an account with "tho i bank. i . Doteotivo"' Broberg said ; that when .ho charged' accused •■. ho said that ..he must • '• boon drunk, as h'o had no authority, to.sign- , the.•cliequo. ,v .• ... Court for trial. i ALLEGED A SSATJLT AND ROBBrP A , - , A well-built man named Thomas, Kane, l alias James Hayes; alias Kcenan, appoared 1 in answer to a charge of assaulting David ' Wishart -and robbiiig him of £7 10s. on . April 29. • ■ 1 / 1 Evidence was given by Wishart that,; , upon entering a public convenience,- ho was ). caught by .the throat'by tho accused. About - half an hour /.afterwards witno3s\ discovered that; the : money; had disap- ; pcarcd, and the police were communicated ; with. The next day, witness" and a man i- *. named M'Plieo saw accused, who said, "You . don't want to get a man punched?" They [ tried to'detain him, but lie got away. Tho man was arrested, and at_ tho Mount Cook Station accused said to witness, "I did it, I but you will suffer for this." '■ Evidence was also given by Charles Capstick, barman at tlio Albion Hotel; Charles King and Norman MThee, labourers; Wil--1 liam Stewart, a wharf labourer; and Con-; stable Wright. ) Accused pleaded not guilty, and reserved i liis defenco. Ho was committed to* tlio Supreme Court for trial. . ' MISCELLANEOUS. I . The chargo against Jim Stclin, of betting . with. a person whom ho :know • to bo an j infant, was adjourned till Friday, witness's I expensos, Bs., to bo paid by defendant. [ Goorge Forgeson, . alias Georgeson, appeared oil a remanded chargo of .being ,unlawfully on tho premises of John. Smith, . Manners Street, at midnight on April 27.
