AN EASY WAY TO CLEAN KNIVES. Much tinio is lost by a busy housewife in polishing knives, laboriously 'nibbing them backwards and forwards 011 a board or rubbing ..them with cloth dipped, in knife polish.' The following method will bo found .t.Oybc very quick and effective First get a picco of felt; (an old hat will.do'); lay it on the edge of the table, and after sprinkling it well with emery powder double it'; then insert the knife between the felt, and draw it in and out a few times; at the same time pressing tho felt from above with the disengaged hand. 1 SAVING SOAP. Pieces of soap left over, too small to use, may bo put into a saucepan with a little boiling-water, a teaspoonful of glycerine, and lemon juice. Boil down, and-form into fresh cakcs. O : FOR TIGHT SHOES. . A'tight shoo may bo mado comfortable by putting-it on the foot, and then laying a cloth dipped in hot. water over the tight part, 'and removing frequently as it. cools. This makes tho leather shape itself to the foot. DARNING. : Mothers, and those having the care of children's clothes, will find stockings (especially the lai'ces), seeks, and undervests wear much longer, if the holes aro darned diagonally instead of the usual way. This gives greater elasticity, and so increases the. durability of tho work. , .t , ' TO STIFFEN CURTAINS. To,.stiffen Madras-curtains after washing, instead of starch, which spoils tho texture, use borax water'. A teaspoonful of borax to every, pint of boiling water makes them, stiff enough. Be sure the water is quite boiling. ..
