SCHOOL GARDENS.
The Carterton Public School has published particulars of its farm experimenting, under the instruction of its headmaster, Mr. A. N. Burns, B.A. There were nine experiments made with potatoes, writes our Wairarapa correspondent, seven with' different combinations of manure, - and two with plots under no scientific treatment.' The ground all round :\vas'"what"isvknown -as shingly.'' 'The best returns wttin from land treated to superphosphates, 4cwt. to the acre', and from a mixture of'superphosphates, bone-dust, and dried blood, 5 ewt. to the. acre. The difference between the plots treated to manure and •those whioli were not was' very'.' great, 1 the. manured plots; being ahead in . some cases 100 per cent.:, Further experiments .with whole . and cut .'sets - of-', potatoes were much in 1 favour of tho cut sets','-although; owing to the drynesp of . the season,-, the, returns of these .were , very poor. - In several instance's' too much manure, is said torsive .been used,but the, returns wero a sourco of satisfaction' to tho youngsters for their industry. It is stated tliat there are many cases where boys ftt;thjs school'are, teaching their fathers the. first rudiments of, scientific farming.
