At the annual meeting of parishioners of St. John's Anglican Church officers were elected as follows:--Clergyman's warden, Mr. A. G. Merrick; people's warden, Mr. Lambert ;; vestry, Dr. Willis, Messrs. Glasgow, Aylmer, Hopkins, Tingoy, Little, Mosfcyn, Innos, Jones; treasurer, Mr. C. J. Little; auditor, Mr. C. N. Cottorill. An endeavour has been made to form a hockey club at Haleombo. At a meeting held for tho purpose quite a number of. persons signified their intention of playing this season. The Rev. jB. Walker has been called upon to take up ,mission work for two months in the cities of Wellington and Christchurch. Ho loaves for his field of'duties very shortly. In the meantime Mr. Walker's charge at Haleombo will be taken over by a'Southland minister. ,

CARTERTON.

At tho Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening the Mayor (Mr. Willie Mooro) brought down a resume of the' year's working, and held out hopes that the - increased valuation would mean a decreased general rate. The balance-sheet for eleven, months' working of the gasworks showed a- slight loss. Many of the smaller contracts for the street improvement scheme were reported' as completed, and the larger contracts as making satisfactory progress. There was raly a small attendance of St. Mark's parishioners at the annual meeting in the schoolroom ■ on Tuesday night, when the following church officers were; elected.: — Messrs. H. S. Moss and George Leach, churchwardens; W. Downard, synod's man; and Messrs. Howard Booth, G. W. Dcller, King, Higgins, Tucker, Mead, and Toomath, vestrymen. During tho,.absence on'leave of tho Town Clerk, Mr. J. Monchicff, jun., Mr. H. Hart will act.as deputy.

The Bolton Cup was fired for yesterday, and won by Woodvillo with a score of 679. Two other-companies fired, but their scores aro not available. Tho poll taken yesterday on tho proposal that the factory half-holiday be on tho same day as the shop half-holiday was carried by ■42 to 5. Mr. F. Brook has sold out his interest in the firm of Messrs. Baillio and Brook. Tho business will in future bo carried on- by Mr. Baiiiie. 1 ~ . Tho " Weekly Press " Shield, won by the school cadets, was presented on Monday. A number of speeches wero given by various townsfolk, who had attended, and tho boys were complimented on their skill as marksmen. The hope was expressed that they would continue to maintain tho high standard tlicy had reached in shooting. Both tho Revs. Eccles and Ginger spoke, the former giving reminiscences of his early schooldays, while, Mr. Ginger encouraged the lads to attend to their, military training, so as to be proficient ..iri' J caso. thero- was need to uso that power in .years to come.

. Tlio annual meeting of parishioners of tho Otaki Anglic,m Church was.hqld on Tuesday night, Rev. Mr. presiding. There was a poor' attendance of members. Tho following, officers were elected:—iMnister's warden, Mr. W. R. Booth: people's warden, Mr. Simcox; vestrymen, Messrs. Dunn, Simcox, Jones, Powlos, St. George. At the Police Court' yesterday afternoon a first offender was charged with tho'theft of £4 65., and was .fined £1, ; on the understanding that the stolen monoy was inado good._ , ■ It is estimated that oyer 1000 Maoris are'' at present in Otaki attending the tangi. The date of the funeral still remains undecided upon.

FEATHEHSTON.

A. meeting of tho Council of the Chamber of Commerce was held oil Tuesday'night, Mr. A. J. Toogood presiding. It was resolved ito support the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society in urging tho 1 Government to accept Mr. W; C. Buchanan's offer 1 of £6000 for tho establishing, of an experimental farm. The matter of £1 extra charge for tho extension of telephono hours was held over for future consideration. It was resolved to bring under tho notice of tho Minister for Railways tho necessity for a spccial shed for tho storage of manure. Tho chairman and secretary were deputed to inquire into the question of extended telephone area. The local Volunteers paraded on. Tuesday night, Corporal G. Walker being in charge.

NIREAHA AND BUSH DISTRICT.

The Mauricevillo Rifle Club will engage in a shooting match with the Tararua Rifle Club at the Nireaha Range. Tho team to represent Tararua'is as follows:—Messrs. 0. A. Olsen, E. Olsen, 0. F. Olsen, Bell, Thomasen; J.. Petersen,. A. . Petersen, and 1 W. Mason jemergencics, Nicols and ' M'Kinley. The school at Nireaha has been in the contractor's hands for a few weeks, and rapid progress is being made. A feature will bo concrete foundations and a basement wall of the,'same material. It will bo remembered that tho old school was demolished in the great bush fires of January 22. Tho twelve-year-old son of Mr. W. Mason, of Nireaha, was recently bitten by a dog, and tho wounds he received bocamo alarmingly inflamed. Medical aid was procured, and the boy's removal to the Pahiatua Hospital was ordered.
