TRADE OF THE PORT.
IMPORT AND EXPORT VALUES. , HEAVY TOTALS FOR A YEAR'S WORKING'. A return of the valuo of imports to and exports from Wellington for the twelve months ended March 31 makes interesting reading. . Tho total value of imports for the year was £5,457,862, and the value of tho exports was £3,097,872, as against £4,760,832 and £3,861,293 respectively for tho previous twelve months. It will bo seen that on the twelve months' working there is ,an increase of £727,030 in the valuo of imports and a decrease of £763,426 in tho valuo of exports. As far as imports-are concerned, every quarter shows an increaso as compared with tho previous year, but on comparing the exports tho position is not so satisfactory, two quarters, showing an advance whilst tho other two show a faliing-off. Tho quarter just closed shows a falling-off of £821,098 as compared with the March quarter of 1907, this decrease being accounted for owing to the fact that a considerable number of export entries arc still outstanding and wiil have to be included in the . June quarter of the present year.'. The Juno quarter exports of tho past year are £79,593 behind .the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Tho totals for tho year are as follows, the figures for the corresponding period of tho previous year being given in parentheses^— IMPORTS. EXPORTS. - JUNE QUARTER, 1007. £1,285,338 (.£1,014,021) ... ,£708,716 (.£783,309). . SEPTEMBER QUARTER, 1307. .£1,485,940 (.£1,340,199) ... .£.137,884 (,£3G1,191). DECEMBER QUARTER, ISO 7. Trade with tho United Kingdom shows a marked increase as.far as imports go, but exports show a slight falling-off. Tho volumo of business both to and from Australia shows an increase, and tho same applies to tho connection with the Pacific Islands. Trado with Africa |ias .increased both in imports from and, exports to,, but more particularly in the cxnorts from this end. There is very little difference in tho value of imports from Asia,, but--at tho same time thero is. an increase. Exports from this' end have fallen off considerably, nothing, at all being sent during the .first and third quarters. Tho value- of both imports from and exports to America show's a marked advance, but both imports and exports show, a decrease ; as far as the value of tho trado with Eurooe is concerned. . . The total values of the exports to and imports - from. the various countries for tho twelve months are as under, tho figures for tho previous year being given in parenthosos:—. . ' ' IMPORTS. Both tho steamers Devon and lonic, which arrived yesterday, brought a number of immigrants. Mr. J. E. March; Immigration Officer, went on board tho steamers with the Health and Labour Department officers. Mr. March reports that tho newcomers woro a very good class, being farm principally. Most of them went to friends or relatives. . Most of those who are going to _ other ports will proceed to-day; those going to Napier by rail, will leave to-morrow, morning-.- '
. Mrs. Gilmour,- a passenger who committed suicide when fifteen days out from England, had tjyo children, 0110 an infant and one aged seven years, l'ho. elder cliild, being a sufferer from the prevailing epidemic'of influenza, ■ had to be left in England in. the care of a relative. This, it appears, preyed . on the mother's mind, and she became very, depressed. On the day. of her death, the doctor of the .ship had noted her depression, and her husband was keeping her company, hut during his momentary absence she threw herself through'a port-hole.
