According to previous advices, the Federal Government proposed to purchase the Tasmanian cables, from tho Eastern .Extension Company, but mado it a condition that the Company should raiso the cables within a specified time :foi' : inspection. Tho Company applied for an extension of time, but the Postmaster-General refused to grant it.. At that timo the Company was asking .C 39,060 for cables; buildings, and baliinco of subsidy It was estimated that it would cost tho Commonwealth .£70,000 to lay two, new cables.
