VICTORIA COLLEGE SPORTS
SUCCESSFUL CATHERINC. Tho third annual sports meeting under tho auspices of tho Victoria College Amateur Athletic Club was held on tho Basin Rcservo on Saturday afternoon. About 500 were present including a good sprinkling of tile fair sex. Tho fields were, in somo instances, not quite so numerous as last year, but, oil tho whole, competition was quite as keen. F. W. B. Goodbehere won the Club championship with a total of 57 points, G. V. Bogle gaining second place with 32 points, and H. Oram third with 22 points. The Oram Cup (handicap event) was won by P. Anderson with 9 points, A. 11. Boglo being runner-up • with 85 points. The 100 yards handicap, which was run in two heats, fell to A. T. Duncan (3yds.), who has a good turn of speed. There was a large field in tho 220 yards handicap, which was secured by Goodbehere (scratch), as a result of a magnificent spurt. Eichelbaum (56yds.) won the 440 yards handicap comfortably. Both the long distance handicaps wero won by D. S. Smith, t a promising youth, who has a free stylo and splendid staying powers. In the mile, Rigg and Do la Mare, who came second and third respectively, wero required to concede him 150 yards, which proved much too generous a handicap. Considerable interest centred in the meeting of Rigg and De la Maps' in this race. A keen ttruggle for second place took place, Rigg gaining tho honour by about two yards. Smith had the three-mile race all his own way, and if, instead of being allowed 320 yards, he had been placed on scratch, it is probable that ho .would have won just tho same. Three of the four competitors in tho mile walking race appeared to bo unacquainted with tho rules. The efforts of the youngest, in particular, especially in tho initial round, occasioned considerable merriment. Instead of disqualifying them during the raco, the judgo allowed tlieni to comploto tho distance. From time to time lie'gave them hints, to which they would do well to pav attention during future practices. Anderson, who is a well-built young fellow, won the hammer-throwing handicap, with a splendid throw of 104 ft., also tho high jump, with a leap of _4ft. 11 Jin., and tho weight-putting event with a put of 31ft. 7in.' Both the I hurdle races provided good displays. During the , day tho P.N.A.A.C. rail three- races, which attracted large fields. Much inconvenience was caused owing to the absonco of programmes, but otherwise the arrangements were first-class. , Tho following are tho results:— - , ~ 100 YARD'S HANDICAP. First boat—A. T.
