A NEW POSITION.
INSPECTORS OF FIRE BRIGADES. .SUPERINTENDENT HUGO SELECTED Superintendent Hugo, of the Wellington Brigade, was. appointed, at; a meeting of the : Cabinet' yesterday,' Inspector" of Fire Brigades. This position was created; 'by the Fire "Brigades Act of last session, which provide that the Governor , may, frpm time to time, appoint some'fit person to be Inspector of lj'ire - Brigades in the Dominion. Such, inspector .shall, lat least once in each' year, inspect every brigade under the control of any Fire Board, and shall give such advice and assistance to the Board as he may deem necessary for the efficient administration of the Act. The'lnspector is required to report to the . Ministerat least onco in each year ; as to .the administration of the Act by tho Board in every fire ".district," and as to the efficiency of any brigade under tha control of such Board. The Inspector shall perform such other duties as aro-from time to time prescribed by regulations. Provision, is also made for the appointment of Deputy Inspectors of Fire Brigades. Mr.'Hugo has had a large and varied experience of fire brigade work to fit him for his new responsibilities; ' Ho was born in. Liverpool in 18C0, and after serving his time at sea, settled down to:, a shore, life, about 1885, in South Australia. He. was connected' with various fire brigades in that State until his appointment to' tho superintendency of the Wellington Brigade ,in, 1899, with the exception'of the period' from 1888 till 1893. Of those five years/ two were, spent in America, whero Mr.■ Hugo gained further experience of firo brigade work, and three were spent on the occan wave as a ship master. The positions! held successively by Mr. . Hugo under the South Australian Fire Board were aff follow Member of tho Port Pirie Brigade, officer in charge of tho Port Adelaide and District Firo Brigade, second officer in charge of the Adelaide City Brigade, and officer in charge of the North Adelaide, District Brigade. Mr. Hugo was holding thia last-appointment when ho was given the position'of. Superintendent in this city: There have been four'.really large fires while lie has been in Hawker Street fire, D.1.C., Lambton Quay, and Parliamentary Buildings. lii"tho case of tho two largest, those in Hawker Street and 'on Lambton Quay,',tho brigade' was rendered helpless by want of water. *' .' Applications for the ' new - Inspectorship •were received'■ from■'- Australia,.as well as' from New Zealand.- \ Mr. Hugo did; not' know "yesterday., when his appointment would. take.'effect. ; His new office will render necessary the appointment of another Superintendent for tho Welling.. ton Firo Brigade. .
