• ——— MONTHLY MEETING. ' Tho Board of Governors of the Wellington Collego and Girls' High School met yesterday morning, thero being presont:—Messrs. A. dp , B. Brandon'(chairman), W. H. Field, M.P., and A. Warburton. '■.( FINANCES. The statement of finances was as follows: — Credit balanoe at bank, £749 3s. 7d.; fees due—Wellington College £518 19s. , lid., Girls' High School £209 16s. lid.; rents due, £273 Bs.; total amount in. credit, £1751 Bs. sd. Payments required—Wellington College, £361 14s. 2d.; Girls' High School', £226 15s. 9d.; total payments, £583 9s. lid. f Credit balance, £1162 18s. Cd.' ■ Mr. Robert Lee was granted leave of absence from tho meeting. , FREE RAILWAY TICKETS. The Inspector-General; of Schools (Mr. Geo. Hogben), in a circular memorandum, referred to tho guestion of free school tickets, regarding which thero seemod to bo an impression that the Education Department was prepared to pay for railway tickcts to enablo holders of Education Board Scholarships and Junior National Scholarships to travel to any secondary school. It was pointed out that freo railway tickets were, in-general, granted only to holders of. scholarships travelling to the ■secondary, school nearest their home, and not, in any case, without the special permis•sion of tho Minister, to any secondary school other than that nearest' their home. Thero was a proviso as to exceptional cases. The: Chairman remarked that the question, summed up, amounted to this, that a scholarship holder at Petono had the choice of attending the Pctone District High. School, or paying railway fare"; in order to attend one of tho secondary'schools in Wellington. . AN EXPENSIVE ITEM. . A return was submitted by tho Principal of Wellington Collego (Mr. J. P. Firth), showing tho cost of maintaining the grounds at the College for tho year ending December 31, 1907; , and a return of estimates rerequired for the ensuing year was also tabled. The return for 1907 showed that wages paid amounted to. £340 os.. 2d.; arid, other , items, including an amount of £35 for a new horse, brought, the total expenditure. up : to £441 ss. 6d. Against this amount was a sum of £188 65.. 4d., made up of a grant of £100, and £88 6s. '4d. from other. receipts* .leaving a balance of £252 19s. 2d., which. amount', it was stated, was found by Mr. Firth.- -The estimate for 1903 showed that £406 ss. 6d. was required, against which there would bo a sunij'on'the credit side, of £188' 6s. 4d., leaving a sum of £216 IDs. 2d. to bo found by the principal of tho College (Mr. Firth). Tho Chairman observed that it seemed-a pity that this was so. In wages alono tho cost of maintaining the College ' grounds approximated something liko '£7. per week. It , was decided to let'the matter stand over pending furthor details regarding the expenditure be--ing procured;-. / . ; GENERAL. ' It was .stated that /the Turnbull Scholarship would not be accorded .this j;ear,- nono of tho. candidates having qualified. v ' The question of repainting tho Boys'.College building was held over for consideration at .a future meeting. It was. Reported by - tho Principal ■of the Boys'; College that 97 scholard i had left,, aud 121 now boys had been admitted. Tho report ,of the Lady. Principal at the, Girls'. College showed .that' the number of pupils-.who had left at .the end of \t-ho year' was 1 ' 45. Thero'had siiice been admitted 50 scholars.
