THE BOROUGH COUNCIL, A meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. 'There were present :— The Mayor (Mr. J. Yv. M'Kwan)-, Councillors Cole, Nicholson, C'astle, Shortt, "Southgate, Lodder, Smith, Colquhoun, and Dr. Harding. A letter was received from the caretaker of the Kecreation Ground as to the cottage. It was decided that the Engineer report on the cost of putting the house in proper order. Mr. Jacobson wrote regarding a smell coming from the Gear fellmongery. It was resolved that the matter bo referred to l tlio District Health Officer for a report. Tlio Department of Public Health, Wellington, wrote with reference to the inspection of a house, and stating the improvements required to bo made , 10, the same. It wa3 decided that notice be sent to the owner. The Railways Department asked that Captain Leppcr be requested to inspect the workshops fire appliances. This was agreed to. A list of expenditure in connection with the Hutt Licensing Committee showed the amount paid to be '<£ol Is.. Gd. .."A letter was received claiming, under section 18 of Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act, the following amount's from various local , bodies v—Hutt County Council (five, hotels, fees -received, JM2- r >j, J213 Bs. lOd.j Lower Hutt. Gou"h wrote with regard to wandering horses. He said he bad issued ten summonses, and Councillor Shortt had stopped the. serving, of-the same. Councillor Cole spoke very strongly about. wandering horses. ' The Mayor moved that 110 further instructions bo given, but that the Inspector carry out the instructions given previously! that if any horse is impounded more than once a summons be issued. Councillor Smith spoke about the want of a court liouso in Petone, and compared the amount of business done in 'other places. The matter of cell accommodation at the police station, and the. need of a safe in which to keep the records of ii;e Court was also mentioned. He moved that a deputation wait, on the Minister. for Justice. This, was agreed to.-. One tender was received from Lowin and Bull, contractors, for moving . the ■ boatshed and . skids—(a) L'abour . for . pulling, down old skids and erecting same to plan, ISs.; (b) new material required, .SG3 155.; (c) prices for bolts, eto., and total tender, • .£l9O 13s/ Councillor Lodder moved, and Councillor Colquhoun seconded, that tender be accepted. This was carried. A letter was received asking for the use of the ground on March. 2S, for a football niatcli between Candle- Company and Tannery Company.. As the ground will be in use .on that date, the request could not be granted. Mr. Armstrong, dentist, asked permission to erect a signboard under his. verandah in Jackson. Street. The matter, was left in thp hands of the Engineer, to make arrangements... i .
POUOE COURT. At the Petone Magistrate's' Court yesterday niorriiiig, before ,'Dr. M'Artlnir, S.M., Herbert Meyrick was convicted on a charge of having unlawfully, assaulted" Louis Truman, and or.dercd to costs amounting to £2- ss;; in default/ three days';j imprisonment. On a .second' charge,of having used obscene language; Accused was convicted, ' and ordered 'to conic up for sentenco when called upon. , ■ At accused's own request a prohibition., order issued against him: • '
Leslie Wooll pleaded guilty to a Charge ol usiiigi obscene ,language, and' was'- fincd ; -.i!5 with an alternative of ono month's imprisonment. Time was allowed in which to:'paj the fine.
For'an admitted breach of. a prohibition order, Alexander Aitken was penalised to the extent of 10s. and 7s. costs, or'in default, -18hoars' imprisonment,..' . , ..., A youth named James Higginson,- for travel-' ling on the. railway without paying tho' fare, was convicted, and ordered to .pay Court costs oh each charge, amounting to Its. in all. PETONE' NAVAUS. : ANNUAL REPORT} ' ' The annual report of the Navalo discloses a very satisfactory position of affairs. The strength of the Company, which has been in existence {or some twenty-five years, keeps up well, and the present number on the roll is 90. Since last year the Company, lias lost the services of P.O. Edmonds. Infantry work Jias, under Sergt.-Major .Withers and '.Sergt.' Withers, much improved, but the ride shooting still requires much attention.,! The drills, both gunnery and infantry, have been ,fairly well, attended. The annual sixteen days'training cijimp was held at'the forts in October and November, and was highly successful.. > The examinations , conducted :by Major Hume, Staff-Capt. Richardson,-, and . others, showed that all ranks were ..well up to'tho mark. The marks obtained'were as follow:— Signalling, 96.9; D.R.P., ■ 98.9; gunnery, 9G.68; gun-laying, 90.36; bugling, 19 out of a possible .20. The attendance at camp was 97 per cent., and speaks volumes for the keen interest tjll take' in the work.:'' The shooting, too, was a record, every shot of the ,forty ! rounds being a ;hit, whilst the times put up also constitute a record. The Challenge Shield has been held by ithe. Company for the past two years. Port Chalmers wrested the Artillery .Cup last year, but Petonc has hopes this year of holding it. 'The' Zealandia Cup is still in possession of the Company, this year having been won by| Gunner Prank Ryan .and crew, with - No. 1 cutter, No. 2 cutter'under P.O. Ferguson being second. The improvements made to the drillshed have been highly 1 appreciated. The official account " shows a credit balance on the year's working 0f'.£22,25. od., of'which amount JE3 Os. Tho assets and liabilities account reveals a.strong position:—Tho assets are valued at J61285 lis. 3d.-sharc of drilllmll '£575, Pctono boat station .£l7O, capitation due £0210, uniforms £100, Kaiwarra station £50, being principal items. The liabilities (accounts due). total £21 is., the balance of nssets over liabilities being £1.61 4s. 3d.
