Acting on medical advice, Professor Cook, who. for many; years has filled; tbo chair of Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Canterbury College, has sent in his resignation: Professor. Cook was born in London, and at an early ago'ca'mo out to Australia.. Ho studied at Melbourne XJniver-: . sity, taking high honours in-mathematics,' and then in 1863 entered St. John's College, Cambridge, becoming sixth wrangler in 1872, and subsequently being elected a 'Fello*'. of his collego. • In 1874 ho- was :appointed to fill the chair of mathematics at Canterbury College, and entered. on the duties in. February, 1875, being oil© of. the three professors first appointed to Canterbury College, the other two being Professor Macmillan Browu and Professor Bickerton. When the school of engineering was opened at - Canterbury College, ho''was'in charge'for the three years prior to the foundation of the ebair of engi-, 'neering, when Professor Scott was appointed. Last year he was given twelve months''leave ' by tho Board of Governors, but, after resum-. ing this year, arting. on medical advice, ho ' has i given notice of resignation.' The most distinguished of ' the Professor's old pupils is Professor Rutherford, who'now occupies the chair of. physics at Manchester University. Other pupils were Mr. W. S. Marris (who on< year topped tho list in the Indian-Civil Ser- • rice 'examinations). 'Dr. Chilton, Dr. Evans, and Mr. R. Speight, of Canterbury College staff, 'who are all senior scholars in-matho matics. . ■ ■
