NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By GLEKpoE.) Four starters appear,ed for, the Stewards' Handicap. Mahuta was.the public elect-, and won very easily. Dear Dolly mado tho pace till tha straight,-where' she stopped to nothing. AVaipaku .was .ridden behind the leaders till tho straight, where she put in a good run, but could make no impression on Mahuta. Gleam looks to bo' in good condition, but she ran last tho whole, way. Alpignee was the oniy'withdrawal from the Potre Hack. -' AVaikaraka, after taking the load near the straight,'went to pieces, and 'could only finish.third. Yosami was first out of the tapes,' and faced with the leaders for four furlongs. " Kareroa was prominent for about the same distance.- Miss Vera, eoinmcnced'well, but did not last long. Contour and Carissima \vere promihciit from the halfmile post-, and Wilson brought tho former along at the right. time, So. that she. won without, any., apparent effort.

All the acceptors appeared in the AVestinero Hurdles. Tho Auckland horse Cachuca was heavily supported, and looked very liko winning half a milo-from home, but tho last quarter of a mile was too much-for him. Maui was a good distanco from the loaders during tho first mile,-but six furlongs from homo lie commenced-to move up, and at tho last luirdlo he : had passed Pantaloon and Cachuca, and won vory oasily. Pantaloon ran a good race, and is an- undoubted stayer j but iii Maui ho mot a superior hurdler. Mooraki was prominent for a mile and a half, but ■ was' out' of his class. Cassiopoa Was not in'tho hunt; at any stage.

Nino horses went to tho post in the Tayforth Hack .Hurdles. Tho track work done during tho week showed Ataahua'.to bp just 33 good as Maui, and ho , was consequently ppunccd upon as the favourite. He-was in front at'-tho .first fence, and from that stage ho jumped beautifully, and had too much pace for any of his opponents. Tho timo for the race was probably a rccord for a mile, aiid- ; thrcc-quiirters over seven . hurdles,.,apd l i the fa'6t'.that A'taahua won with' such "con- : slimmato case points to. him as one of tho ■best hurdlers that lias been seen'out' for .many a day. : ' Tho fact that Aorangi beat. Moscow in a gallop this morning also adds to tho'merit of Ataahua!s win. Aorangi jumped 'pretty well to-day, and had ; everything except the' winner woll boaten. Clarcniont ran fairly .well with tho 'top- Weight, but the pace effectually settled the rest of the field. .:

All the acceptors appeared for the: big ovont., ■ Tha owner of Uhlando confidently expected! his horso to put up a good.perform- 1 anca if the track -was. wet, and when tho rain came .on before tho .Cup,, fr.ee, ho gave Cress instructions to go to the front as soon as possible.' Tho result; was''that tho.'brown gelding was taken to. the lead, as Soon as two furlongs , had'' been., covered, aild ho fairly revelled in the going. .Waitapu mado a wove towards him half'. a mildVfrom homo, but Cress rodo very confidently ,> and never drow the whip on Ins mount. .There was no.necessity for . it, 'for Uhlando < galloped verygenerously, and won by a good two lengths, and though the public had gone down badly, they accorded the horso _ and rider a good ovation. Cress did iiot: intend to come to tho meeting; but Mr. S. E. Cooper, who lias a' good opinion of the lad's Tiding, induced Mr; Eva to engage him, and he was telegraphed . for' on Tuesday night. ' The Was a slightly' better favourite than Master Dolaval Oil the machine, but though both wcro prominent, at different stages of ' the race, they could not.finish better thah sikt-h and..seventh. -Gold .Crest was .one of. the. disappointing candidates.', Those who did hot expect liirn to stay tho distanco antiei-pated-that he would be in front for..a por-* tion of .tho journeyj but ho commenced very slowly and never once got amotig the leaders. The going was against -Marguerite, and tho distanco was perhaps a trifle, too far for her, but she looks very well,"■and is apparently in great form. She should bo considerably benefited by tho gallop;. Moloch, who got into a wiro fence-a couple of weeks ago, and has . not done much work, finished a°long way in the rear of the field. .Wnitapu was nicely handled by M Kay, and had a nice position in the last mile, but had to be content with, second position. Signor was in the front rank for the first mflo, .but dropped .into tho ruck at the baok. Ho,put in; another'run in the straight and finished close behind tho placed . horses. Ho :is a game littlefellow, and ■ should win a good race in time. There was a field of - six for tho Juvenile Handicap. A.-'Bae, ridor of Gold Laeo,_ lost his seat • shortly after the start. , Taitakp got a poor start, and nevel' had ,a ..chance with tho two first horses. Lady Menscbikoif took tho lead early, and, setting a good pace,, led tho field ■until woll iilto tho straight., whero Bunvan caught her, and after a good finish the Fordell horse won by a long neck. : The AViritea Hack wa?,a benefit for Daisy 'Paul. ■ She 'was takon to tho front shortly; after'tho start, and had no difficulty in maintaining her position. Anemono was in tho rear of tho field'until about half a mile from homo, whero sho moved up and ran into her usual pla'co of second. . Sho lias'been ■ rather unlucky lately, but is sure to win a race shortly. Woo Trinket, tho favourite, ran with tho leaders for six furlongs, ; and then-tired. Moscow did not appear to relish his impost in the heavy going.

Gold Crest, Raugipapa,; Toa Tulli, and Mon Ami word ■ withdrawn from the Flying Handicap. On account of tho accident ,to Rae, Gold Thread was ridden by R. Young. The big chestnut got all tho best of tho start, and, keeping tho load all tho way, she won by u couplo/of lengths. Wailmku and Ballarat wore last away, and neither got near tho front. Kitchenmaid ran very well, but had no chanco with Gold Thread, who promises to bo as usoful as his full brother Auratus. Shearsby's marc climbed badly at the finish,, but on the dry going sho should bo bettor.
