MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
POLICE OASES. (Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) A STOWAWAY. A young man named David Manson was convicted and fined £4, in default twenty-0110 days' imprisonment, for having travelled from Sydney to Wellington by the Union Company's steamer Warrimoo without paying his fare. Defendant was without means,"and made no statement as to his prospects in New Zealand. CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED THEFT. Hugh Mullens pleaded not guilty to a chargo of' attempted theft of money from Carl Evender, labourer. Complainant alleged that whilst ho was having a drink in tho fourpenny .bar of tho Duke of Edinburgh Hotel -accused came up and spoko to him. Accused put his hand in complainant's pocket and took somo silver and a fow coppers. Constable Brown, who was called into the hotel by complainant, searched accused, and found threepenco on him. Accused denied any knowledge of complainant's iuon<\v, and stated that Evender approached him and asked for the loan of a knife. Subsequently complainant said accused had taken his monoy. His Worship said ho was not satisfied on tho evidenco that a theft had been committed. Defendant would bo discharged. MISCELLANEOUS. For insobriety Arthur Scott was convicted and . fined 10s., in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. On a second chargo of having been found on licensed premises dnring the currency of a prohibition order, tho same defendant was convicted and fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment. ; Ono first offender for drunkenness -was convicted and discharged* ' ■
