TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS.
ARO STREET REJECTED
POLL OF WADESTOWN RATEPAYERS. The Power Stations and Tramways Committee of tho City Council rccommended that electric- light mains bo extonded to Hataitai at an estimated cost of £27". As to a petition from the residents of Ivclburnc, 1 aitville, and Highbury, for the extension of the r Io Aro Street .tramway to tho end of Norway Street, Taitvillc, tho Committee reported ijhat tho estimated nccessary expenditure of over £10,000 was not warranted at tho present time.
Regarding the City and Electrical Engineers' joint report on the proposed tramway to Wadestown, tho Committee drew attention to the clause in 1 tho Onslow Borough amalgamation report of March 14, 1907, doaling with tho alternative tramway-routes, as follows:— ' "The City Engineer to report upon the brat tramway route to Wadcstown, also tho cost of the motor 'bus service; alternative motor 'bus and tramway scheme to he submitted to tho ratepayers, tho report, to ho simultaneous with road improvements report. Tho whole of tho South Ward to be subject to a special rata to cover tho loss, if any, of tho tram or 'bus service that may be installed.'' • The Committee recommended that tho alternative tramway routes as reported on by tho engineers be submitted to the'Wadestown ratepayers. If route No. 2 wero adopted, the rate necessary to bo struck on tho /unimproved value of the area, to mako up for tho shortago shown in tho engineer's roporfc, would be 4 3-lGd. in the pound. : Discussing the proposed Wadestowu train servic6j Councillor B:ss raised tho,question .of taking the lino from the Thorndon terminus direct to Wadestowu. The . Mayor said that the City Engineer ivas againlt it. The'grade would bo about one in two. ' : . ' : Councillor Carmichael: raised tho question of a tunnel through tho hill, which might also be used in-tlio carrying of road metal. •, The Mayor said the engineer would go fully into all such matters.' Councillor. Biss. asked if any application had been mado, to people whose properties would bo materially enhanced in value, to contribute towards tho cost. . The Mayor ropliecl that lie believed that somo such negotiations had been proceeding in regard to ono,'estate. They could ascertain what likelihood tliero was of support in this direction. Tho report was adopted;
