AN INTERCOLONIAL CONTEST. " DAILY MAIL " " OVERSEAS MATCH. The Secretary of the Council of Defence has received, through His Excellency the Governor, a letter from tho Londofi "Daily iMail," with rcferenco to the . forthcoming InterColonial Empire Day Rißo Match, to be fired for on May 24 -next. The letter states that the "Daily Mail" has decided to offer a fifty-guinea- challengo cup for yearly competition, on the conditions laid down hereunder. ; To each member of the winning team will also be. presented a silver .medal. ' : The first competition' organised by the "Daily Mail" took place on .Empire Day of last year, and was won by the Guernsey and Alderncj; (Channel , Islands)' ,' l , Militia . Riflo Association's team, with an. aggregate scoro of 766 points. The match excited great enthusiasm, and the organisers of. tho movement received numerous letters of 'congratulation from prominent military men, including' Lord Roberts, Field-Marshal Sir Evelyn .Wood, V.C., General Sir J. D. P. French,-and; MajorGeneral Lord Cheylesnioro, Chairman of tho National Rifle Association. \ : ' . , Lord Roberts said:— , , "Anything which, tends to draw; closer, tho ties that unite the Colonies to each • other and to the Mother Country' should be encouraged, more especially a competition like this,: where the' weapon is one, the attainment of skill in the use of'which by all good citizens, will do much ito strengthen tho defcnco of the Empire." Owing .to tho great - interest taken, in (themovement, it is belicycd that.tlio 1908 match will be a very-representative one. The entries to date include 27 from various parts of Canada; Newfoundland, 1;-Channel Islands, 2; South Africa, 9; India, 1; British West Indies, 2; North China, 1. . The conditions arc as follow:— ' Ranges—2oo, 500, and COO yards. , Rounds—7 '.shots, and one sighter at each range. . ■, 'Position—Any . position with head to the target. ; > . Team—The eight highest scorers on the day of the match to count as the team.
; Competitors—Competitors to be bona-fido members of the Association under which they shoot. i Rules—Bisley rules for the current year. An independent range officer is to bo appointed, to sign score-sheets and rccord weather conditions. ■ , The match is open to all riflo associations, whether volunteers or rifle clubs, within the British Colonial Empire. THE SARCOOD CUP. , .EEVISED RESULTS. . . On January 22 last there appeared the' results of the Sai-good Cup Competition. It was stated that the list wns uncertain, as two districts, Canterbury and Nolson, had failed to send in their completed returns within the time specified. The results published announced that the Cup. was assumed to have beon wdn by the Orepulri (Otago) Riflo Volunteers, with a score of 208 points, the runnersup being tyic Wanganui Rifles, with 21i points. Two returns have since ibeen received fron: the ; Blenheim Rifles and the Waimea Rifle.' respectively . (Nelson Military District), ant their scmos liavo resulted in the Orepuk: Rifles being placed second, and the Wanganu: Rifles fourth.
