The Hon. R. M'Nab. will not be'able to find time this month to visit Southland as at first intended. , Mr.; R. J. D. N. Potts is gazetted a clerical cadet in the Department of Roads. The Right Rev. Dr. Wallis (Anglican Bishop of Wellington) is on a brief visit to Wanganui. :. i' • ■ Air. J. G. Price (Church of Christ) has been gazetted an officiating minister under the Marriage Act, 1904. Mr. John J.'J. Mallard has been appointed a member of the Wellington, Palmerston North, and l''cilding Fire Boards, vice Mr. l'\ Allen, resigned. Mr. J. P. Cochran, secretary of the Sydney Trades and Labour Council, has arrived in Wellington. His Council has given bim a month's leave of absence. Mr. Norman Anderson, son of Mr. Edward Anderson, of Wellington, leaves by the Corinthic on a business trip to England. He expects to be away a year or two. The portfolio of 'Minister for Dcfence, which the Hon. R. M'Nab filled temporarily in place of Sir Joseph Ward, during the,absence through illness of the Hon. W. HallJones, has not yet been resumed by the Premier. It is probable Mr. M'Nab will continue to act during the Premier's absence in' Auckland.
Mr. Mattbow Paul, who has been ap-. pointed an Inspector of Mines for the North Island, at a salary, of £315 a year, graduated from tho pit (says tho Thames . " Star "). He is a member of tho Thames School of Mines, and possesses a mine firstclass certificate of competency.' He occupied the position of mine manager to the Kura-nui-Caledonian Gold Mining. Company at Thames for many years. Ho is a son-in-law of Mr. James-Coutts, who recently ' from tho position as Inspector of Mines.. It ■ is probable that one inspector will attend to tho coal and the other to the metal mining. Probably Mr. Boyd Bonnie, the othqr inspector of mines, will take over the inspection of coal, for ho holds first-class certificates tor both, branches of mining'.
