(BY TEIiEGftAm —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Chbistciuiech, February .5. ' The forty-fourth annual general meeting of shareholders of the Christchurch Gas Company was held to-day at the Company s ofhees, Worcester Street. The directors, in their report, stated that the result of, the year s opera; tions bore testimony to the progressive policy determined upon by them, a; few years ago. " During tho period - referred to, continued the report, "it was decided to develop the manufacturing branches of the business, anil also to erect new workshops, showroom, and offices. In pursuance of this policy, extensive machinery. and plant have'also been imported, and: are now in operation, for the manufacture of ammonia, water gas, and firo bricks. The new retort-house, now under' construction, is designed to meet tho increasing demand lor ga-i with economy of production. These works have entailed a heavy, outlay, necessitating the issue of £25,000 of debentures, the calling up of £40,000 additional capital, and the absorption of large cash reserves. The figures of the bal-ance-sheet amply justify ,the policy :.of the Company, --as, in view"-of tho increasing cost of r coal arid labour, it is doubtful if the'old rate of dividend could* have been maintained but for the revenue derived from tho new branches of business referred to." The directors -recommend, the payment, of a dividend of:s,per cent.,, making,/ with the interim dividend of S.'per cent, paid in' July last, 10 per cont. ■ for the year,' arid,, after providing for reasonable. additions to. the reserve and renewal funds, to entry* forward; the balance of ■ .-£3917 lis.
