'■ Business peoplo are congratulating themselves "on the carrying of the £4500 loan for street improvement, though very'few of them took tho trouble to record their votes, contenting themselves 'with saying, "Good thing the..loan is carried, but I forgot to vote." ' It is the usual -thing forgetting, while business rivals in other towns aro forging ahead by remembering. - A delightful change has taken placo in the weather, and rain hns fallen for the past "sixteen hours. It is quite refreshing to see the tiny pools of water on'tlio streets in placo or furrows of»choking dust. The drill shed of the Carterton Riflo Volunteers has been connected with the Borough gas mains, and the light will bo used for the first time'to-night, when the arms.-and accoutrements will be served out. ,''

' The Wellington Education' Board lias agreed to make the neccssary alterations and repairs to tho school at Koputarua. , A cricket match was' played on the Levin Recreation Ground on Wednesday between the Levin and Y.M.C.A. teams, which resulted in a win for Levin by an innings and 26 <rnns. Levin made .136 in their innings, and the Y.M.C.A. mado 34 runs in their firsthand 76 in the' secmid innings. . Tho principal scorors for Levin were Burns,; who made 65, not out, and Farrington, who made "36. A serious fire occurred at Koputarua on Wednesday night, when! the Post. Office and Mr. Coo's store were burnt down. The lire made such headway that" Mr. Coe only just managed to save his own books and those of ' the Postal Department, losing' all his other stock. The building was insured in the South British Office for £200, and Mr. Coe had his stock insured for £400, and his furniture for £100. Still, above the insurances, Mr. Coe expccts his losses will amount to something between £200 and £300. At j tho meeting of the Fire Brigado Committee held this week, accounts amounting to £6 were passed f6r payment. It was decided to alter the hanging -of' the fire-bell, so that it could be heard at a greater distance. The meeting also' decided to try and hold their annual sports in conjunction witli the Weraroa Sports Club, who are holding a meeting on March 17, and who have written inviting tho Brigade to join them. >.

A special meeting of the Featlierston Town Board, presided over by Mr. J. W. Card,' was held on Thursday night, to consider tho water service. It was stated that Mr. Scott had suggested carrying the intake pipe further up the river bed, where t-lie river was narrow, and putting in a concrcto wall,- .the estimated cost being £70 to £80. Messrs. Card, \V. Benton, and AV. Homier, wore appointed a committee with power to act-, and were recommended to take the depth' of the solid rock just below the present intake for the purpose of putting in a concrete retaining wall. If this is not workable, Mr. Scott's suggestion is to be carriod out.
