WELLINGTON GAS COMPANY.
riIOPOSED ACQUISITION BY THE CORPORATION. Reference to the proposed acquisition by the Corporation of tho works belonging to tho Wellington Gas Company was made at last night's meeting of the City . Council by the Mayor. "The Gas Committee has not yet prepared its report," said His Worship," but the whole matter is under consideration. The members am of opinion that negotiations should be entered into with a viow of seeing whether the purchase of the Gas Company's works can be effected. Under the agreement with tho Melrose ISorough Council the Corporation has the power to purchase the branch of tho Company's works situated within Melroso. No doubt the Council will feel inclined to exercise that, right. It would be a great inconvenience—and the inconvenience would become accentuated in the future—if tho works in Melrose were owned by tho City, and the works in the City were tho property nf a privnto company. Up till now tho information, which the Council is entitled to has not yet been supplied, and, therefore, it is not yet known how much money will bo required. Tho Melrose option is not a very favourable one, and it will bo for the Council to flay whether it. should bo exercised at onco or later on. I think that negotiations should be entered into with a viow of completing the purchase."
