On February, 8, .the Conciliation Board, sitting at Fnimerston North, will he.Vr a dispute between the Palmerston North Painters 1 and Decorators' Industrial Union of. Workers and the master < painters' at .Palmerston North, Marton, Tjirakina,-' Pukepapa,, : Haleombe, Apiti, Kimbolton, Foildiiig,, Ashhiirst, Longburn, Tokoniarii; Shannon, Levin, Weraroa, Foxton, Rongotea, and Bulls."-' The Union ask that the hours of work shall bo from 8 a.m. to o p.m. on.five days of tho week, and from .8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, with one hour for dinner, from September .1 "to April 30; and from 8 a.m. to i!3O p.m. on. five days of tlie week, and from 8 a'lm. to noon on Saturday, with half an hour for. dinner, from May ,1 to August 31. All journeymen painters, paperbangers, glaiiers, .(Trainers; and and all other journeymen working •at any branch of 'the trado shall, they request, be paid not less than Is.'4jd-'tier"hour. The rales for overtime.,.demanded ,are as follow :.--Between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., time and a quarter; between B,p.m. and miduight, time and a half; after midnight and up to 8, a.in. on,; the following morning, double time; on Saturdays, time and a half from 1 p.m.. up to.midnight; on' Sundays, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Labour Day,. double time. All employees to cease work on Christmas live until January 2. ' ■ Country, work is held by the .Union.to be the work : perfcfmed' by a journey man or .apprentice, at a distance of six miles or over from his.employer's place of business,.and suburban work is held to be work performed at a distance of over three and . less than six miles from tho employer's place of. .business. The dem-ihcls relating to apprentices . state that the term of apprenticeship shall-bo five years, that the- propOrtion of appteiitices to 1 journeymen shall not exceed one to every three, and that, the wages shall be as follow For .the first year 10s. per week,- for the second year 15s. . per week, for the third year JEI ' per week, for the fourth year £1 os. per week, and for tho fifth year XI 10s. per week. Preference to Unionists is. demanded by the Union, also a provision stipulating .that. an employment hook shall be kept at some convenient ■ place. Among additional clauses., is one to the. effect that sub-letting should not lie 'permitted. '■
A'meeting of. master painters and otlier6 aifected by tho Painters' Award, was, held at Dawick's Buffet, Palniersto'n North; on Tuesday evening. Mr. Harford, of Feilding, was voted to the chair. • • ■ After, hearing reports.from Feilding, it .was determined to form a master painters' association, to.be called the Manawatn Oroua Master Painters' Association, and to embrace all master, painters from Levin to Turakina, inelusive; : The following otneers were elected Chairman, Jlr. Harford; vice-chairman, Mr. Turner; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Clark; committee, Messrs. G. P. Amor, Minor, Person, Hancock, Bloekbonrn, Tingey, Chapman, and Proctor, with power to add to their number. The rules and by-laws of the old Wellington Association were practically adopted, with some slight alterations, and will be distributed as soon as possible. It was resolved to register the t'nion at once, and to take such steps as may ho deemed • neces'*ry to defend the members of the Association in the matter of Awards, etc. The secretary was • instructed to call another meeting as. soon,as necessary
