Pahiatua, January 29." - The annual meeting of' the Pahiatua Racing Club was commenced to-day in fine weather, with an average attendance of spectators. The racing was of an - .attractive . character, the contest for the Cup resulting in a splendid finish between the first five horses. The winner, Loiret, showed form at the - 1' pxton meeting. She was ridden by E. Lowe, who rode Loniaria to victory in the Ashhurst Cup last month. Speculation oh the totalisator was brisk, the sum of £6621 being passed through the machine during the afternoon, as against £5983 for Cup day last year. Twenty-five bookmakers ' were licensed for the day. Ona of the number failed to settle some'bets made oh the second race. Tho following are the results . HANDICAP HACK HURDLES, of 60 sovb. Passing the stand the order was-Wai : paku, Aborration, Saga, King's Lynn,, with Gaelic and Loiret tailing the hunched field. Going around the top Waipaku. drew out, and led by half a dozen lengths, from Aberration, who was-.about- three lengths , ahead of King's Lynn, the remainder being bunched,' with Loiret still in the rear. The ordei' was much the same until half a mile from home,' where King's Lynn, passed Aberration and San Julie, Nova, and Loiret commenced to improve their positions. Half way up the straight Wsiipaku .was in trouble,, and the whole field commenced to close.up to a beautiful finish. Waipaku' gave way to King's Lynn, but Loiret came fast on - the outside and won by half a length. Nova finished strongly.and was a neck away, third,-. Waipaku fourth, San Julie fifth, and Saga last-.
