Palmerston Borongh Council met yesterday morning in camera to consider tho report regarding tli'o Gas Company's > agreement. Tho Pross representatives were excluded from tho meeting. The Council decided " That the Gas Committee endeavour to arrange a corifererice with tho directors of the Gas Company, and to inform them that tho Council is advised that tho agreement is void, 'and to suggest that the . company should, make fresh proposals; that' the borough solicitor arrange the confcrcnco, tho Committee afterwards to report, to tho Council." . Mr. 0. 0.. Pleasants; who contested the Oroua seat at the last election in the Liberal interest, informs me-that ho has not decided whether to consent to be nominated for, the coming election. Mrs. W. T.- Wood informs me that she will, at an early date, organise a movement for tho establishment of an old mon's home for, the district. As Mrs. Wood has on niany previous occasions, identified herself with similar movements, and has met with every success, it is! safe at. this. early stage to predict that her influence will have the desired effect... ' Constahlo Connor, the victim of the recent stabbing case,, left for Rotorua to-day for a six weeks'.-holiday. ... ' , At Palinerston Hospital yesterday a pleasing function took place when the retiring niatron (Miss Dougherty) was tho recipient of a very.handsome framed shield containing portraits of the nursing and medical staffs, the chairman of the Hospital Board, and the secretary. The ; presentation was made' by Dr. M'lntyre, who made fitting reference to tho matron, who had devoted her whole life to hospital work. She had resided in Palmerston ''right; frfim, tho commencement of the institution. To tho staff she had always shown tile greatest consideration, and to the patients she wnsj a skilled nurse, and lie.r synjpathotic •. manner helped largely towards, their recovery. .In leaving tho hospital she .would carry with her many pleasant recollections of the hospital and district, which she , had served so long, so well, and so faithfully. A committee has been set up for the purpose of presenting a testimonial to Miss Dougherty.' :
