(DT TBI,EGKirH—SPECIAL COItRISrONDBNT.) Dunedln, January 28. Mr. Mooney's maro Sonia (by Vantosa) dropped dead while at exercise at Forbnry this morning. Sho was owned by the Hon. G. M'Lean, and raced in his colours till tho early part of tho. present month.

It will be gratifying news to the many friends of Mr. J. 0. Evctt, the veteran handicapper, who has been'incapacitated by illness for a long time past, to learn that the movement to present him with a sum of money has mot with ready response. Jlr. J. Henrys, the well-known handicapper, was amongst the first to sot the proposal in motion, and as the result of his efforts, coupled with thoso of Mr. Lucki'e, of the .Hawko's Bay J.C., Mr. Nixon, of Wanganui, Mr. Hayr, of Auckland, and others, a substantial present to the veteran seems probable. The Wanganui and Wellington Racing Clubs, for whom Mr. Evett used to handicap, each gave £25; fivo mombers of the committee of the Hawko's Bay Jockey Club, when the matter came before them, each subscribed £5, and many other donations aro coming in. A number of contributions wero received at the Wellington Club's recent meeting. Those who are engaged in tho good, work havo been inspired to further effort by the hearty goodwill which has invariably accompanied tho contributions.
