AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. The- Basin Reserve will bo the scene of considerable excitement on Saturday afternoon when strong teams of athletes from Canterburv, Otago, aud Southland will strive with Wellington for possession of' the New Zealand Amateur Championship Shield. Last, year tho Wellington representatives invaded Canterbury with' a determination to bring tho coveted Sheild to' Wellington; and followers; of outdoor sports will not have forgotton the performances the. Wellington team recorded, nor the enthusiastic reception they /received, when thev returned with the Shield. Now they are called upon to "defend the athletic honour of Wellington, and from a perusal of tho names of the men selected it. would appear that they should do so successfully. Next Saturday's carnival will' bo especially interesting. inasmuch as three membcrs'of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association will attend the gathering with the vie\v of selecting a team to represent New, Zealand at the Australasian Amateur Athletic Championship'meeting, which ■ takes place at Hobni't next month.; In view of. this■ 'bach" competitor will strip at his best, and some stirring: contents should be ; witnessed. The local Centre has issued 'numcrous' invitations to; ladies, and has made' every effort to' make the gathering an. enjoyable-one. The entries for the meet-: ihg are as follow':— " 100 Yards—T.
