REMARKS BY MR. ASQDITB. DENOMINATIONAL INSTRUCTION. Bt TEl.lCttirH—riiESS ASSOCIATION—COrTBIGHTI (Bee. Jan. 26, 4.32 p.m.) ; London, January 25. Speaking at Norwich, tho Chancellor of tho Exchequer, Mr; Asquith, said that the Government's generous and indulgent facilities with regard to denominational instruction would not bo .repeated.: Thiir policy would bo'to put the. nation first, sections afterwards. . '< : ' V ■' THE NEW BILL'. The statement! has been made, on what looks like good authority, that the nest Government Education Bill will consist ,of four clauses only, and will embody two alternative offers to the managers of . Church or other denominational schools :—<l) Tho school may ,be carried on and the buildings maintained at the public expense, .tho managers retaining complete control of the buildings out of school- hours, on the two-fold condition that their .special religious teaching be given only out v of school hours, and that CovrpertTemploism be tho only religion. taught in, school hours. Tho other alternative (2) would permit the managers to "contract out"—that is, to remove the school from control by' the local authority—thus forfeiting- rate-aid but roceiving, on the other hand, an increased- grant' from the Board of Education, and being left to carry on their o.wn religious instruction unimpeded.
