MISSIONS TO SEAMEN
The men of the Koya.l and Mercantile Xavies were entertained by the Missions, to Seamen on Wednesday, when an all-day picnic was held on Mrs. Rhodes'? estate, the, " Grange," Wadestown. Sports of all kinds took place, under the direction of the Missiouer (Air. .las. llo'ore), and prizes, kindly donated by Mesdaines Aldoiis and llhodes, were won by the following:— Messrs. T. SUurpe, 'K. 11. Baker. E. Savage, Klsburv, W. Groves, .'lt. M'Neilage, Gardiner, G. llakcr, B. Quinn, .1. Seton, G. .Sharpe, AA 7 . liussell, Deliertv, .1. I!. M'K'ee, .1. Grace, G. Wood. Jordan. 11. Newton, T. Mills anil Howell. A learn representing the Home boats defeated a team from the coasting vessels in the tug-ol'-uar competition, after a very bard contest. The lunch and tea were provided by tin; congregation and friends of the Mission. In the evening a concert was given by the Alisses Arthur in the Institute, which was crowded to the doors. The following contributed items to the programme:—Mrs. Wettenhall. Misses Jamieson and Arthur, .Messrs. Coute, Cromer, and Doherty. Miss Arthur acted as accompanist. Several popular choruses were sung by the audience, and a conundrum competition ' was won by sailors from the Papanui. A hearty vote of thanks was given to the performers aud to all who contributed to (lie day's enjoyment.
