■ THE MARTIN-CHAPMAN CUP. MANAWATU y WELLINGTON. ' , The third :polo match ; pf, the ' was played yesterday, under excellent auspices,, botwcen Manawatu- and Wellington A. The match was tho first round; of. the MartinChapman Cup, a handicap event. Manawatu were represented by Strong, W. Gicsen, Levin, and H. Gifford-Mooro; anil Wellington: . by, Grace, : M'Cosli-Clnrke,: L. Williams, and P. J. Nathan. ! Wellington received a , handicap, of 5 goals. . . ;Thc game started off at a ding-dong bat, and' as ' the result of.. detbrmihedv sorties, Manawatu rung on two goals in quick suc-cession,-the successful players being Strong and ' Gicsen. , Wellington, .by determined* play, equalised matters through the'agency .of Graco and Clarke, a .few.minutes before the end' of the spell; In the second., spell play- was . close,, and no further,- scpro: resulted; but in-the succeeding spell Gicsen added another, to iManawatu's total from a free hit. A. few minutes afterwards. Strong, got in a successful stroke. The' fourth spell witnessed a sensational piece of play by Giesen. ■ Giving, by a quick cut-, a goal against- his side, he got the ball out throughthe line ,of • his opponents, and galloping down the', field with. a succession of clean straight drives, took the spliero, right to-his opponents' goal and -.shot successfully. Levin also scored in this spell. In the.fifth spell. Williams hit Wellington's-third goal,, and the last'spell saw no further addition to the scores. The final results were: Manawatu. G goals. Wellington (including handicap 5 goals) S goals. Wellington therefore won by 2 goals! The latter part of the gamo in .particular was-open 'and fast, and plenty of dash was shown. The ponies- appeared about equal. The-scoring was similar to. that of Monday, when the two teams first met. Play, if anything, was better than on that occasion,.and was more "open. Mr. K. Duncan - was umpire. . . ' . ; - . It was decided at a meeting of the, Now Zealand Polo Association .that the entries for tho'Savillo Cup Competition should close on March.-18, and that tho.meeting start on March 28. .
