LORD CURZON.
' IRISH REPRESENTATIVE PEER, •r lßLioEArn—ruESs association—coi'rnicnr , , (Rec. Jan. 21,' 9 p.m.) ' '■ London, January 21. Lord Curzon,. of : India, has been: elected an.lrish representative Peer, to sit in tho Houso of Lords i' ' I . EX-VICEROY'S GRIEVANCE. ' Lord. Curzon, in a letter addressed laEt month to the Irish Peors, agreed 'to stand for tho vacancy in tho House of Lords caused by the death of Lord Kilmaine (who committed suicide). ... Lord Curzon explained that the strain, of his work as Viceroy of India prevented his seeking a seat in tho House of Commons,' and added that ho is debarred from entering the House; of Lords by ordinary ohan'nels through the refusal of tho Primo Minister (Sir /Henry Campbe}l-Bannerman) to allow him to sit', with all the other es-Vicefoys of India on.-thosg" benches.
; ThiS' letter was at once the theme for much press commont, some favourable and somo unfavourable to the writer. Inter alia, it was pointed out that ex-Viceroys, aa : such, have not been called to the Honse of Lords. Lord Curzori's. position .was that, being an Irish instead'''of an. English Peer, a scat in the House 'of Lords was riot available: to him unless 7 lie 'was elected by his fellow Peers as their representative. This they have now done. 'The; Liberal newspapers have stated that {he. real reason why Lord Curzon does not 6cek a Unionist seat in tho House of Commons is that he is,a freetrader, and as such is not acceptable ' to the tariff reform element' of the Unionists.
