A BRILLIANT TRIUMPH.
SUCCESS OE A NEW PRIMA DONNA. | *r Tir.BGturn—riiEsa association—eorinioirr. . Now York, January 17. Madame Totrazzini, a now prima donna, had a brilliant triumph at New York in "Vjolotta." She scoured twoivo. rccalls. ' _"Violetta" is the. soprano part in "La Traviata.", Madamo Tetrazzini (ears M.A.P. ) ha? emulated tho great Osar, inasmuch as sho came, saw, and conquered. A few daysWo she was unknown to tho musical .public of: London—to-day she,is ranked with i'atti and Molba.' Already! her admirers have dropped tho prefix of'Madame; the hall-mark of; a genuine-' success,, and \speak : of .hor as Tetrazzini. After only a couple of ■ performances she can boast of a public, an achievement' Unrecorded in the case.of cither l'atti or Melba. The new prima donna is a Florentine, and comes ot a thoroughly musical family. Her sister made a gratifying debut at Covent Garden soma years ago, wnilo her brother-in-law is Signor Campanini, the celebrated conductor. It. is n remarkable fact that Tetramni, liko.i DeiJ-lterake,and Caruso, has practically. ,boen her own instructor. For sis months sho studied under Signor Cecoherini, and, at. the brnKofi that, period, her professor shrugged his shoulder-), saying, "Go. neither I nor anyone else can teach'you anything mote." ; '~.So :U\c singer;,weiit,''and, fslcvcn years', ago, made her first appearance' at the Tcatro Verdi, in her native • city; She win(j the music of Inez, in "L'Africaine," and gained some little attention. Last year, through a misunderstanding, Tetrar.tini found herself booked to appear with each-of America's "rival impresarios, Conried and Hamincrslein, In her dilemma sho' was unable to tell what to do. Bach mwager wanted her to sing, vet each threatened to injunct the other if the artist appeared. ■ • • _ Thore was onlyono possiblo solution—not to sing at all. But oven this suggested an action for hi each of contract. Tho ijjnger chose tho latter, course, with satisfactory results, and Loudon has been the gainer by her action, Beside? the Queen of Italy, tho Diva has sung before the Tsar and the' King and Queen of Spain, and'she wears many jowellcd souvenirs of these occasions. ' , Tetrazzini is a woman of such catholic taster, that when she is jaded and tired she enjoys herself at a music hall. Her face is ono of partieulav dignily, in which two dark, pene•trating eyes are dooply set. Her hair is most luxuriant and of a beautiful colour; while her manner is- vivacity itself. This is her first English visit, and her thoughts on "men and tilings" arc most ingenuous.
