The American woman has the- reputation of keeping her youth longer- than the women of any other white nation, particularly if she has wide and varied.interests. On the other hand, tho American man. ages sooner than his contemporaries in other countries, and t-liis is said' to be owing to his willingness in extreme youth to assume .-heavy responsibilities and. to do strenuous, work. American women have a keen interest in.life; the great majority aro in the world as wage-earners, but there is less blatant- talk about, feminine independence than formerly. Certainly her resources free her from being dependent upon i mere man, but, in addition, American rucn and women meet on more equal ground. They frequently hare interests in common, with the result that comradeship between' the sexes, is real and not affectation. Besides being able to preserve youth, which, after all, is only a matter of spirits, -the American woman keeps her ,looks along with her enthusiasm and energies.- She rarely allows her .life or herself personally to drop into a groove. In all classes in the United States there is, a determination to get-' along and hustle, and women are infected as well as men. One of the effects of tho well-wearing' qualities of American womon is tliat the latest records indicate that a great number (if marriages -in the last few years show the wife to be-fivo or six years, older than the husband, and such unions are proving to Jjc satisfactory in every way.
