Even then, vessels of the Dreadnoilglit class will bo unable to pftss through the canal. , i ■ ■■■. Tlio original Dreadnought has a width of 82ft. New American battleships of the Dreadnought class are. to hiivo ft width of 85ft. Probably Inter vessels will be wider still. The width of the locks of tlio I'anamtt Cfinal, as originally provided for, was 100 ft. That would leave' a ; ship of : 85ft: beam only 7jft. of leeway on ench sido. Bnt in November the American Government dpcjdcd to, increase the width of th<i locks to 110 ft; '• Even' With' the most skilful towing, such a margin is held to bo necessary.. But what isto be done if ships go on growing? In seven years' time,, when the canal 'is completed, sea-monsters, naval and mercantile, may have quite'outgrown it.,
