HASTINGS.
January 8. Mr. A. L. D. Fraser has received the following reply from the Minister for Internal Affairs regarding the proposed alteration in the boundaries of the borough: " Have wired to Wellington to stay all proceedings until 1 return, when 1 will consider the matter and communicate with you again.—J. G. Findlay." Since receiving this telegram a deputation from the petitioners waited on Jlr. Fraser and stated that their 'complaint was not against the present Council, hut was of several years' standing. When taking over the roads in the portion of the borougn proposed to be affected the Council of the time agreed to form and metal Ada and Louie Streets. This contract had never been carried out by that Council or their successors, and the petitioners claimed that they had a grievance. Mr. Fraser subsequently waited on the road overseer and 011 His.Worship the Mayor, with the result that 110 is satisfied that there is justice in the claims made by the petitioners. It is recognised that what is asked for deserves serious consideration, and Jlr. Fraser says if that is given there is no doubt the matter may be amicably, settled to the satisfaction of all concerned without altering the borough. It is most probable that tiie matter will be arranged by the Council redeeming tho promise made by their predecessors. January 9. It is understood that, on account of the local tenders being too high, fresh tenders arc to be called for in Australia for the poles required for the extension of tho roticulation of tho Waipofi electric scheme. Tho Easter volunteer manoeuvres are. to be held this year in the neighbourhood of Hampden. They will bo 011 as complete a scale as possible, and will extend over four or five days. A largo contingent of South Island volunteers is expected to go into camp. Tho Duncdin cabmon say that their trade is going to the dogs. " A bare living," said 0110 man, in response to a query. Another said, "Come with mo, and see my bankbook. 1 lost £150 last year." Tho next cabman pointed to the well-equipped landau on the rank, and said, "Do you see these? They are only used for funerals and weddings.'' Then he added, half regretfully, "and they don't happen too often." The fourth Jen 11 said, " I tell you there is only a bare living at .this game.".
