I (BY TELEGRAPII —TKESS ASSOCIATION.!'
Auckland, January 7. : At this afternoon's-meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. W. J. Napior moved, thnt the Board iii committee consider - 1 - I c PP. u P on the desirability of lengthening Caoliope Dock, with a viow to beinj* ablo to afford dock accommodation for the largor typo of naval and morcantilo vessels now bomg built. He said that when the dock was constructed it was up to date, but now it was almost obsolete. It was unsuitablo for tho larger class of vessels, and it was also unsuitable, so-far as its construction was conccrned . Vessels woro now constructed differently from former vessels, and although tho Board had tried to remedy the defects -by making changes sufficient had not been. dono. lie was informed that it was not considered possible to dock tho H.M.S. Powerful, although' tho dock was fifty feet longer than this vessel, unless considerable alterations woro made. Tho dock should be made available for tho warships '.on tho station, and also for tho larger typos of tho morcantilo marino vessels. Wellington was going in for the. construction of a largo dock, and, whilst ho did not bring tho matter forward on that account, ho thought that Auckland should maintain its supremacy, as the naval port and tho. premier port of tho Dominion. Mr. H. J. Bradnoy said that the'dock required'widening as well as lengthening. Mr. H; D. Heather agreed as to tho necessity of widening the dock. Mr. Napier agreed to amend his motion by substituting the word "altering" for "lengthening," and in this form it was carried.
