Mr. • J. C. Lane, secretary of the Mana-' watu A. and P.' Association, has on view at liis office a specimen of tho dodder plant, ai parasite : weed? that, attacks clover, ' gorse, has, hops, etc. > Ho secured it from a-gorse bush m'Canterbury on a recent.visit to that. district, i A; characteristic: of 'the plant > s ' that it; has no leaves, and consequently mo: .ohiorophyl, and, therefore; is' unableito feed on thd soil and convert the elements of the soil into plant sap. , It'has to steal its food' ready-made from the;stalks;of the plant it. attacks, entwining it with its. own!growth. It'-is an' annual seed-bearing plant, and, though not' yet .prevalent in/ Manawa'tu) ;has. a reputation which' farmers everywherelrespect. 'Mr. Lane deserves 'thanks , for . exhibiting the specimen, for ; it -swill.'enable ;a; farmer to recognise the parasite if 'it should over, visit the northern farms.' ".. .
