THE BEST BACON PIC.
For bacon purposes (writes our Manawatu correspondent),. - Mr.-.-E.. White,, the wellknown pig-breeder, prefers. ;aDovon-Berk-shire or a Tamworth-Berksliire. cross: The objection some people have to the Tamworth cross is (said Mr. White) that the-Tamworth as a r rule is not. noted for having a" very strong constitution, and- a pure Tamworth takes careful handling'in order to mako.'a success..in. breeding. The colour of • a VBerk-shirp-Tamworth is not" so uniform as shire Devon cross, arid, on the whole, in,the Devon- cross there is an excellent pig' for bacon' purposes.' A farmer who tindorstoou his work snould- be able Jo get his pigs ready for the-factoiT'in Ksix months., . Asied if it was'.riot possible to get the pigs up to tho desired weight in five months, Mr. White replied that he-had heard farmers say that they had done .so, but in his experience six or.-even; seven months were necessary. A great , many farmers, however,, were in the nabit of, counting, the-age of tho pig from tho time-it ; was weaned. ■
