WHAT- DOES IT COST TO PRODUCE A BACONER?
, Mr. White, the well-known pig breeder (writes our. special Manawatu correspondent) says' that, it is, practically all profit to fatten pigs, ■ provided a farmer breeds all the-stock and grows feed. on .tlje farriy, but .-to. buy feed, except, for .the-finishing touches was a foolish undertaking. It did riot ..pay a man to buy'feed to-fatten-a. pig except for his own ' iiso and to build up a good firm sido of bacon; Even then it would almost pay him best, to go apd purchase his bacon from!a store, provided he could judge a good piece of bacon. • • • ... ■
Why! has, so. much inferior ba?ori found, its way into the market ?!.■•■..' , v . " Oh, that is -easily said the breeder." "Pigs fed. on. skim milk, without any hard , feed, produce bacon which, ! when piit upon the pan to fry, suddenly seems l to disapppar iup 'tho cliimney. But .there is also siich i tiling as. getting bacon too firm, so that . a little milk is useful. To got a pig well fattened 'and ready for the factory during the present season would cost about 2d. per pound. .' That is, assuming, that the farmer grows his own feed; arid- has a good' supply of milk at hand. This leaves a margin .of'profit of about' 2d. per pound, and in serine,'cases, -25d.,' so that it pays any small firmer to give, plenty. of; attention to pigs "
