CBT IELEQEArn—rEESB ASSOCIATION.) Walmate, January 6. A firo early this morning destroyed two small shops, with dwellings, opposite tho Comity Chambers. One shop was occupied by' Mr. Wooffondcn, fishmonger, and tho other by tho Singer sowing machine agent. The firo originated in the houso of tho former, whose lurniture was insured for £120. The building was owned by Mr. J. Hunt, and insured for £200—both in tho Union Office. Another fire broke out in Shearman Street this afternoon, but only in nn outhouse, and the! brigado put tho fire out before much damngo was done. For tho first time the new high-pressure water supply was used at the fire, and the tost showed its effectiveness.
Two centenarians, aged 101 and 102, have boon arrested at New Orleans for lighting in a restaurant. It is tho. inherent right of every nation to tako its own thought for the tilings which belong to its penco and security. For this reason tho people of this country will neither resent tho growth of Gorman naval expenditure nor, we trust, fail to tako noto of tho now and increased estimates for tho German Navy, and in duo timo shape their own measures accordingly.—"TimeA."-
