TRAGEDY IN IRELAND.
A tragedy involving the loss of at least thrco lives," and the possible, deaths of two other men . who wero'\ seriously Vouii(fcd >; took place' in'- Limorick recently. ~]?our reyolvor shots' woro discharged by a man named John Carrol), ,in Upper Williams Street, - at a man named Roidy,' and t ;lii3 stepson, named Tho latter-/was killed, and Roidy died in hospital. Tho 'police, who were quickly' oil tho scene, were unable to capture the man, who barricaded himself in his house near by, where lie to-.. mained,.armed with tho revolver, and threatened tho ]ife of any ono who approached. Tho police formed a strong cordon, around tlio budding, which was tho object of curiosity .to thousands who visited: tho. after tho committal of tho crime. . The motive for tho tragedy is said ,to liavo bcoil trado joalousy and heavy. drinking. The murdered men wore both married, and bad been engaged .iii the city for some years at their business, and tho assailant's premises aro situated in the. same street. . About two o'clock tho following morning Carroll surrendered himself. It was then discovered that lid had shot himself in the left sido, and had also cut his throat-with a knife. Ho was removed ,to hospital, where he died about a quarter to four o'clock; Earlier ill the night he shot Act-ing-Sergeant Maguiro and Constable AVaJsh, who were in hospital in a critical condition. Carroll, it is stated, was in an asylum in 1893, and had been drinking. Rcidy; a short time beforo his death, -stated that h« and his assailant had never had a (juarrol, but that there was always trade: -jealousy between them.
