, The dotectjvcs of the.London'and Nbrtll> Western Railway, assisted by the Metropolitan polite, have been busy investigating what is bolieved to.bo .a .daring robbery. Four boxes, containg bullion to the total value! of £4000, were- consigned by a firm , in the City/ from London! to Para, via Euston and. Liverpool. Tho boxes wore duly loaded oil a Thursday', .nightj! when,.they wore - despatched ill one of the ' railway company's parcels, vans. On the arrival of the. consignment' at Linio Street, Liverpool, it was discovered that one of. the boxes, containing 2000 half-sovereigns, was missing. Tho carman of the van in which the boxes travelled fromr-the : Gity is . positive that he delivered the' at Euston. , . V ; The ' missing bos Was one, in which; rcoin is usually stent, being made of, wood, clamped with iron bands, /and. sealed i on' each side 4 when loaded. -JVith the coin 'the' box would weigh about : 251b.', and could easily be - ' carried by a mau 'pf ' strength, 'as it in-no way fortns-'a bulky parcel, being about, eight ihchcs'.square ; by six inches'deep. ' Throe of "tho company's detective staff in London, liavo. been investigating " the; matter ' continuously since it .was , discovered that tho box, which left tho _ City betweenseven and nino o'clock,': had disappeared: '. : It is alleged'that the'parcels .were 'not registered at' the Eastcheap office of 'the Company as bullion, .but woro handed' in as ordinary parcels, and treated in the'ordinary way. Later in the evening the four boxes wore conveyed in. an ordinary parcels van to Eustgn Station. On the. way several places were called at rind other parcels collected arid delivered, a boy being in attendance on the van during- tho-drivcr's 'absence. Tho consignment was . not checked at the station,' as it had been looked after at Eastcheap, arid tho boxes wcro placed either on tho' 9.20 goods train or tho 10.0 passen- 1 ger train for Liverpool.' 111 ■ the morning'/ the officials at Euston were' notified/that r . one of, the boxes was missing. ' Inquiries ' were made all along the route, but no traco of/ the missing gold lias been found;': ItV is supposed by the railway authorities that'the box was lifted from tho parcels'vail _as it was going from..the City to Euston.
