"Their form showed a slight improvement in this game, which was exceedingly fast, but, as far\ as can be judged, the' Colonials arc nqfc strong onough to.'tackle successfully a combined Northern Union eklc. Wynyard scored a elevor try soon.after the commencement of play, Messenger landing a goal. %i . , i " The home A forw, ards, however, frequently gained possession,, and, scored twice, before the interval. ■ Meanwhile, however, Wynyard and Messenger had added further'tries'for the All Blacks, wjio led at the interval by 13 to 5.* Immediately,'.after , resumption of play, a bad blunder on the part of the home backs allowod the Colonials to go farther ahead, Todd getting over, Messenger placing .a-goal. In tho closing stages Hull attacked strongly, gradually gained the upper hand, and. secured a cpuple of trios." ' The " Daily Chronicle-" says that thero was no doubt about tho determination' of the New Zealanders, and the fact that their two previous defeats—by Wigan and Barrow —had roused them to.a sense of their responsibilities. That they had not shown tho form with which they had been credited in certain mutches was due to,changes in tho team. The opening stages of the game were remarkable- for tho splendid football exhibited; on both sides. Thero was vigour in tho attack and stubborness in tho defence, and while Hull showed fine form in passing among tho thrce-quartersj tho New Zealanders wero conspicuous by their dribbling and ■ short transfers by all sections of tho team. Hull came again towards the close, attacking with remarkable energy, but their effort was too late.- '. " ■.■■:,'' ' '
