MANAWATU RACES. POSITION OF THE BOOKMAKERS. (BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Palmerston North, December 20. The bookmaker.; met tho Mnnnwatu Racing Club this afternoon in connection with-tho conditions under which licenses were to bo issued for tho coming races. The bookmakers made the following requests: — That the clause requiring £5 fee for clerks be expunged. Refused. That tie clause forbidding persons who had carried on business as bookmakers from being admitted as clerks be expunged. Agreed to. That the bookmaker be allowed ,to bet up to starting time. Refused. That larger space for betting operations be allowed. This was acceded to", and threefourths of the saddling paddock allotted for the purpose. Up till a late hour only four bookmakers had accepted licenses, tho largo firms refusing to accopt the ■ conditions imposed by the club. At a.meeting of the Racing Club.to-day it was stated that tho secretary had received a letter from Sergeant Stagpoole to the effect that it had been suggested to Commissioner Dinnio that the club would endeavour to restrict bookmakers .to a certain portion of the course, nnd might call upon the police to assist in doing so. As it was not clear to tho Commissioner that any such power existed, the police* could not assist until sucli point had been legally decided. Inspector Wilson in forwarding this instruction directed Sergeant' Stagpoole to inform the secretary of, tho Racing Club that tho club would requiro to employ persons to eject bookmakers and others, if necessary. The police,' however, would stand by to prevent a' broach of the peace in case the club officials put persons Olf. In connection with tho clause in tho Gaming Act requiring the totalisator to close at the advertised starting time of each race, the Alanawatu Club- protect themselves 'by the'following clause in the Correct Card:— Tho timds stated' in this Correct Card for tho starting of the several races are subject to alteration by the stewards. Any such alteration will be notified on . the club's racing board, and such notification, and not this Correct Card, will constitute the r official notified time of starting. A Ikrge crowd of are already in town, and the meeting promises to bo a successful one.
