SENIOR MATCHES.
Tlio sixth series of senior competition matches was commenced on Saturday afternoon, when tho wicket was in its usual condition. Tho details follow:— PHCENIX v. MIDLAND. In thoir first innings, which occupied two and a half hours,! Midland mado 131 runs, the scoro at tho fall of caeh wicket being as follows:—Olio for 14, two for 24, three for 41, four for 44, iivo for 77, six for 83, seven for 91, eight for 112, nine for 123, ten for 131. The highest-scorer, Bruce (54, not out), gave a, sterling display. His total included one 5, obtained from an off-drive, four 4's, • six 3's, ono 2, and the rest singles. Upham made six from a. hit to long leg, but was caught next ball by Gibbes off Wilson. Quee and Williams each made one 5, tho former from an off drive and the' latter from a hit to long leg. The fielding of the Phoenix team was creditable. When stumps were drawn Phoamx had made 76 runs for tho' loss of eight'wickets.' At tho fall of each wicket the score was as follows:—One for 18, two.for 18,, three for 18, four for 40, five for 46, six for 54, seven for 55, and eight for 62. Gibbes, 27, was top scorer. Tho catch by which Mitchell, who was • fielding in the slips, secured Little's dismissal was a very fine one, tho ball travelling low, and tho fieldsman stretching out so far that ho lost his balance. NEWTOWN v. PETONE. . ■ Tho Newtown-Petono. heat was commenced on the Athletic;Park; ; 'Tho.wicket was;in a very bad state, and, in consequence; several of tho players went" homo moro or less knocked about. Newtown were sent in to bat first, and were all disposed of for 108. Tho only two men to reach double figures woro Tilyard 38 and Plimmer 15. Tho former played a fine innings, and only gavo ono chance. Ho batted confidently, and played for all tho runs standing to his credit. Tho scoring was slow, tho contury being hoisted aftoj ono and a half hours' play. Tho Nowtown wickets fell as follow:—Ono for 15, two for 15, three for 38, four for 57, five for 66, six for 87, seven for 96, eight for 96, nino for 105, ten for 108. Cobcroft put up a fino bowling performance for Petono, securing eight wickets for 53 runs. Tho fielding of tho suburban team wns first-class. Petono had lost eight wickets for 219 nt the closo of tho day's play. Ishorwood contributed 51 by fairly good cricket, and Harbor made 34. Barber played tho luckiest innings of tho day, giving several simplq chances which were not'nccoptod , , and scoring off balls that ho had no idea-of playing. , Cobcroft' played : good cricket" for his 23, and tho ball iTom Ryaii which sont him to tho right-iibout was a beauty. Tho fielding of the Newtown team was slovenly to n degree, and the number Of chances missed was enough to break the spirit of tho bowlers. Ideal conditions prevailed to-day, ■ when the firat match for. possession of the Plunket .Shield was-commenccd between Canterbury and Auckland. Tho teams were as follows:— •. Canterbury:—A. Canterbury won the toss and. the: innings .was opened by Lusk and Patrick, to the •bowling of Relf.and Howden. The half century went up for forty minutes' play, and Lusk readied 40 with a beautiful cut to tho ropes. Tho same batsman kept busy, getting •some splendid on pulls, and reaching 50 in an hour. At 69 Haddon bowled in place of Kerr.. , Rolf bowlo dagain at tho south end, and grand fielding by Prime, who was doing splendid work in tho country, saved a boundary. Singles gave Patrick 20, and tho same batsman sent 90 up with a grand cut for 4. With only a single added, Relf got Patrick 1.b.w., the board showing 93—1—26. Reese was next, and Kerr replaced Haddon, and the luncheon adjournment then took place.. •On resuming, at 2.15, Rolf, from the south end, opened to Lusk, arid tlio ilatter was caught,at the wickets first ball: 94—2— GG. Anthony joined his skipper and opened witlr a' nice off drive for 3. Howden was the other trnndler, and Reese started with a singlo and then drove him magnificently for 4, sending 100 up for an hour and a half's play.- Anthouy got. a like stroke to tlm ropes, but in the same over played late at ■Howclen and was bowled: 107—3—7. Whitta followed, and Reese drove Howden ■ tlireo times in succession;.; Whitta opened with an oil drive off Relf; 4 being run. Kerr relieved Howden, and slow play followed. In ICorr'a next over. Roesn made a 'wild lunge, and, the ball going off tho edge of
his bat, Rolf brought ofF a fine catch in tho slips: 1.12—1—20. Orchard followed. Whitta got another single, and then lifted Keif high to long on, where Hussey brought off a good catch : 136—5—6. Cuff filled the gap, and 160 wont up after two and a quarter hours' play. Howden replaced Kerr, and Haddon relieved Howden, and Orchard got under the first ball and lifted it to forward cover, where BrookSmith mnde an cosy catch: 10]—0 —19. Bo.\-shall was the ingoer, and opened his account with a sweet off drive, but in Maddon's next over Cuff was out l.b.ir.: 170—7 —6. Bennett joined Boxshall, who sent one np to the-bowler: 182 —B—l6.8 —16. Crawshaw was next, and opened with a nico brace to leg, but then Bennett bumped one up between tho wickets, which Relf had no difficulty in reaching, 185—9—1. Malone was last man, and play was slow until he got Haddon to leg for a trio. Crawshaw was then caught nt. the wicket, and tho innings closcd nt 4 o'clock for 190. Herons and Brook-Smith opened Auckland's innings to the bowling of Malono and Bennett., Both men batted with tho utmost confidence. Crawshaw relieved Malono at 50. At 76 Reese took the ball from Bennett, hut the score still mounted steadily. BrookSmith reached 50 with a fine off drive, 90 going up with tho stroke. .The century 'soon followed. This brought Majone on in Reese's place, mid in his first ovor Brook-Smith was caught at the wicket: 100—1—53. Masou was next, and Bennett •bowled again in place of Crawshaw. In his first, over Mason was magnificently caught in the slips by Anthony: 107 —2—2. Cummings followed. At 131 Reese howled again in Malone's placo, and Crawshaw relieved Bonnett, and Cummings and Homus cut each sweetly for 4, sending 150 up for ail hour and three-<iuartev's play. Luslc relieved his skipper at 158, find Cummings drove Crawshaw grandly for a quartet. 'In the. first grade, Albion defeated Carisbrook B by nine wickets.- The' former made 288 (Crammond 87, Corbett 58) and 15 for ono wicket; Carisbrook' compiled 170 and 129 (Austin 09). In the lattcr's second innings, xMacFarlane took four wickets for Dimedin heat Opoho by an innings and •36 runs. The former declared their lirst in'nings closed with s'evon wickets down for 235 (Crammond' '82, Bannermaiv 60 not out), while Opoho mado 138 and 61.
