THE TARIFF AND THE LABOUR MARKET.
"HON. J. A.'MILLAR INTERVIEWED. Tho Hon. J. A.-Millar, speaking to a Dominion ' reporter, .Yesterday, said that the now tariff soomod to be giving every satisfaction in the South,. whence he had just re-. turned. Several firms on whom ho had called had told him that they wore busier now tilan they had been for many years. This applied especially to the bootmaking and tailoring trades, and also to the engineering trade, which was improving very rapidly. The Minister also stated that he was obtaining information from nil parts of the Dominion in regard to tho reported scarcity of labour in soveral industries. Tailors and boot machinists seemed to be more especially in demand. ' There was a desire in some quarters that the Government should embark upon a yory oxtensive immigration scheme, but he did not anticipate that any such steps would bo taken. The matter, had not yet been discussed by the Cabinet.
