M' Gregor's Raumatai, 3min. :S. M'Williams' Rival, olmin.; E. Fcnton's Endeavour, llmin.; G. Higgio's Olga." 15min.; H. iMiiraan'a Slcipjack,'lsniin. M..G. and Skipjack did'not start. Endeavour got , away off the mark'first, followed by the Rival, R-authatai, and. Olga, and led right up,to the Southern. Hulk buoy. In the meantime, the Rival was ranking.short boards close to, the'wharves, and got to windltard of Endeavour, and rounded the buoy first., The Raumatai blew out a jib at the buoy, and reefed. On.the lead,down to Jern : ingham, Erideavonr. sighted an inverted boat and stood by to render assistance if riecesC3ry.; This put her out-.of the.race. Raumatai reached oome-first at 4hrs...slJmin., with Rival 2min. behind, and : olga 22min. behind; With handicap allowances this plnc.es Rival first, thus'securing the Petrel trophy pre : s'erited by. Messrs. M'Keegan and. Lambort'i and Raumatai'second .prize, half a . guinea'. Jlr. P. A. Wilton acted as starter, judge, and timekeeper. Mr. M'l&eg'an framed the handicaps. *■
■ ' A DAT OF TROUBLE. ; Last Saturdny afternoon's racing proved disastrous <fr'om-the yachtsman's point of view. : The heavy breeze tested the gear 011 tjie various' .boats', Wd' ui V 'severa]"cases 'the gear was not equal to the test. A number of '■ minor accidents happened during the afternoon. There were only two 1 starters in the" first-class .'racejWaitangi and Ngaira, ;and both' camp to grief .before :the. race was finished. The Waitangi carried away a backstay, and Ngaira had a complete collapse. She lost her mast again, and'had to give up, ns she was practically-a;wreck. In.tho secoiidclass,event,severnl accidents occurred. The race was won. by Petrel, with Janet second, a'nd Wairere third. The Mahaki won the third-class event, with the' Moana second. The-other starters did not complete the course. The Wariho,- a new boat- recently imported from Auckland, capsized near,the coal hulks, and was severely damaged by the boat which went to the rescue. The' hiilk-keeper on the Oceola did thing, in, his power to make the boys .com-, fbrtablei and the .latter desire to tender their heartiest'thanks to the coal-hulk men, and also the officers of the U.S.S. Company's Kamatni for their, kindness in supplying clothes and "something warm" after tho accident. ■ ......
