RIFLE SHOOTING.
' '/MATCHES AT TRENTHAM. ' ' On/Saturday 233 men journeyed to Trentham, par Volunteer "special, ' mid Buffered various disasters' at tho hands of a fierce northerly, which blow across the range. No .less than ten targets. were blown down", and one of tho men in- the trenches, Marker Cropp, sustained a severe bruiso on'the knee from a falling target. The usual competitions were in nearly every case abandoned, and the companies engaged in sweepstake matches at 200 yds, High •coring was, of course, not to be expected, although a glance. at. the scores hereunder shows that sotne r , of ;the riflemen put. up a pretty Rood fight with their ftnetny the wina. A patient , and /philosophical rifleman is a somewhat rare being, but if any such were present oh the range on Saturday, they certainly went back several years in their philosophy. The rules for t echelon -firing, state that if 12' targets .are liiu'iposen between the companies in echelon, .J?'?° danger. The Permanent men state i l i targets between* their ownand the Mher company's. Replying to a qiios-. hon .by.The Dominion representative, Captain' Gonigan Saidthat, on account of the unusnal v high .wind which was blowing at the turn!. _ ho could not take the responsibility of allowing echelon firing. He sympathised with' the men,- but, after consulting with Lieut Collins, he-came to the conclusion that tho "conditions ' were too risky.
