LIONEL TERRY CAPTURED.
A SHORT CHASE AND NO VIOLENCE. (ir TBLEQBAI'ir—SrEOIAL CORRESPONDENT.)' ' Dunedin, Deuombor 12. Lionel Terry (who escaped from .Seacliff Montal Asylum about three weeks ago) has boon arrested, ami is being brought baok to Soachff. When discovered by the constables ho bolted, but was chased and caught). Ho resisted his captors. particulars as to tho capture of Lionel lorry aro to the effect that about 7 a.m. on Thursday tho weather suddenly cleared, and Constable Brien, who was washing his hands outside the hut, saw Terry coining round the hill towards him. Ho wont ihsido and told Constable Kidd. When the latter came out Terry was some forty yards awav and still walking towards the' hut. v Constable. Kidd said: "Come and got sorao breakfast." lerry rejoined that ho would not because ho did not want peonlo to see him about, and on the word lie turned and made for tho bush. This was Brian's cue. and there was no stage wait. Ho leaped the fence between him and the tugitive, and went after him down'the hill. It was a short chaso. Only a littlo over 100 yards had been covered whon tho thirty yards' start was reduced to livo, and then Terry tuniod and let drive nt tho constable. Brien ducked and seized his arm, and.a second or two later Constable I'ont had tho other. Terry said, "No violence," and there was none. The. affair was over in a minute or two, and Terry was so littlo put about that ho accepted tho invitation to breakfast with the constables, and ate,! a very good meal, lotting no vegetarian theories stand between his stomach and tho mutton chops.
Tho lorco of the resistance was not equal to tho strong man reputation that follows Terry. I understand that he weighs only 12st. 61b., which is light for a six-footer, and I have an idea that, there are a dozen men at tho Dunedin 'station who could take him single-handed. I mention this, not to belittle Brien, who went straight for what everyone thought would be a tntigh job, but in order to put a nail in the coffin of oho of ttio many romantic stories that surround Terry. He is neither a Sandow nor a Deerfoot, and certainly not a Tom Sayers. Upon arriving at Seacliff, Dr. Tfuby Kin" suggested that tho handcuffs might bo n£ moved, as there was no chance of oscape Constable Pont replied that Terry.had escaped before, and ho could not remove the handcuffs till ho had a receipt for delivery of his prisoner. Later, Dr. King again preferred Ill's request, assuming all responsibility for Terry. On this the handcuffs wero removed, and Terry accompanied the doctor to his old quarters.
