DUNDEE WHALER NIPPED IN THE ARCTIC. THE LAST OF A FAMOUS VESSEL. The " Glasgow Herald" reports that the famous Arctic ship, the Windward, has been lost in the northern latitudes. Four years ago the Windward became attached to the Dundee whaling fleet, and information reached the city recently that about the middle of June the vessel was lost in the ice at Carey Island, Smith Sound. The information was conveyed in a cablegram from Quebec, to which it was first carried by the Canadian Government cruiser Arctic, which had just returned after a lengthy cruise in the whaling waters. Under the command of Captain Corney, the Windward had a crew of forty ,_ and the cablegram also contained the gratifying news that all hands had been saved. The unfortunate men have been distributed amongst the other Dundee vessels. Full particulars as to the nature of tho disaster are not yet available, but it is b"liev~i- "lit ''- Windward had been nipped in the ice and crushed to pieces. Captain Couiey is i,erh..i.s the youngest of the Dundee whaling skippers, and his luck has been of tho cruellest nature. Since he obtained the post of captain about six or seven years ago Captain Cornoy has had the misfortune to loso three vessels in tho Arctic regions, viz—the Nova Zembla; tho Voga, 'and the Windward. The ill-fated voyage was begun in the beginning of April, and up to tho time of the disaster she was probably clean, for the intelligence received from Quebec recently contained the general statement applying to tho other vessels of the Dundee fleet, that "up to August 3 there was notihng do?ji£ in' trhal'es." The Windward '.as a famous exploring ship. Built at Peterhead in 18G0, she was engaged in 1595-36 with the Jacksou-Harmsworth Expedition in Franz Josef Land, and in tho fall of 1898 she conveyed Dr. Nanscn to Vardo on his return from the famous dash for the North Pole. Subsequently the Windward, vas gifted to Lieubeforo she was purchased by a Dundee firm she carried the Norwegian, flag for some time.

"The advent of the Marama has been hailed witli delight by the travelling public, says the New Zealand Tourist Agent in Sydney, writing to Mr.T.E.Donne (General Manager), "and her presence in the inter-Colonial trade must have a good effect upon passenger traffic. Tourists from the Old World are so well catered for on the mail steamers that they are somewhat, prone to look with prejudiced eyes on the New Zealand passenger boats." METEOROLOGICAL.
