If ' POSITION OF BOOKMAKERS. . The paragraph in yesterday's issue 'refe*. ring.to a Wellington bookmaker having received information that the Racing' Confer, ence was in favour of licensing bookmaker! on a scale, based upon the amount of tlio stakes is emphatically denied by Mr. Whyto, secretary of the Wellington Racing Club. Ihat gentleman states that no Racing Conference' has' been held since the passing oj the Gaming and Lotteries Act, and the Conference does not meet until it assembles in :Welhngton on January 23 next. None in Cliristchurclv 'or elsewhere can' know the mind of the Conference. In any case, the idea was absurd, because it would hit the country clubs-very hard, if it'did not .'wipe thorn.out altogether, and'as those cliibs havo representation at the Conference they would be sure to. oppose it tooth and nail if such a proposal were put forward, which was not at all likely. • ■ ■■ '
