MANUFACTURE OF CRIMINALS.
SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD LAD'S RECORD. ' It would be hard to beat Isaac Ferguson's criminal record (says 'a Melbourne paper). Ho is only 17 years of age, but lie has already bcon sentenced at Melbourne, and Ballarat to eight and n half. years' imprisonment on nine charges of housebreaking and larceny. Ferguson was sent to Pentridge in November,; 1906, and,at the request of the' Salvation Army lie was transferred in October last to. a reformatory farm at Bayswater, whence lie escaped on November 2. During the last week or two tho poliep have bcon inundated witji reports of ..housebreaking- from Kew,... Kensington, Vl -South:.Yarra, and. St. Kilda,• and ; recently. ..Ferguson ■ was arrested. Six charges of of housebreaking and stealing were laid against the youth. He ■ admittedall the charges, and also confessed ,to ten other offences of housebreaking. When ho was sent to Pentridge lie was allowed to mix freely with the short-sentence men, and, to. nst his ,own words, "ho learned moro in the 12 months he was there than ho was eve' likely to learn again.
